Dear Psychology Major Graduates,
I want to offer a heartfelt congratulations to you all on your graduation. I know I speak on behalf of the rest of the faculty and staff in our department when I say that we are incredibly proud of each and every one of you. This is a significant accomplishment that you should take great pride and personal satisfaction in!
I’m sure for most of you these years at Buffalo State College have flown by but will be something you remember forever. Even though I’m one of those old guys who yells at birds to get off his lawn, I can still remember that feeling of finally finishing that Bachelor’s degree. That is yours forever. Own it…...and allow that reality to sink in. You are a college graduate! And even though your senior year may not have happened the way you had always imagined (honestly, who could have ever anticipated anything remotely like these recent events?), I hope that what you’ve learned over these past few years has made you more prepared for that “next level” – which is both exciting and scary at the same time.
For some that path leads to graduate school, while for others it leads directly to a career. Whatever that might be for you, I wish you all the best and continued success. But maybe more importantly I hope that you find a way to “make a difference” in whatever you choose to do…..to take what you’ve learned and the sum of all of your experiences in college and be a mechanism for positive change in your communities. Isn’t that why most of us go into Psychology in the first place…..to “help people”…..to impact those around us? As C.S. Lewis once said “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending”. Take a look at where you are now – at what you’ve accomplished so far. Now this is your chance to use that to write an amazing future! I wish you all the best as you start the next chapters in your life!

Dr. O'Quin: To the class of 2020: The lack of a physical graduation ceremony makes it harder to create the memories that culminate your college experience. However, you will go on to create new memories within your own story, because Buffalo State graduates rise and make the most of what is dealt to them. All your professors hope you will emerge from this difficult time with your health and your sense of humor intact. Staying positive requires active effort, and humor can help you weather many of life’s storms. You carry our best wishes with you.
